What makes you a reliable plant sitter?
Communicate with the Plant Parent Before the plant parent departs, have a conversation with them about their plants. Ask about their watering schedule, preferred light conditions, and any specific care instructions – write it down if you have to! Understanding their routine and preferences will help you provide consistent care and ensure their plants thrive in their absence.
Maintain open communication throughout your stay. If you have questions or encounter any issues, don’t hesitate to reach out to the plant parent for guidance! They’ll appreciate your proactive approach and dedication.
Consistency is key when it comes to plant care. Follow the plant parent’s established care routine as closely as possible. Stick to the designated watering schedule and any instructions you’ve been given. Consistency minimizes stress on the plants and promotes healthy growth.
If unsure about specific instructions, refer back to your handbook (they gave you one of those, right?). Avoid making assumptions or guessing – accuracy is essential in maintaining the plant’s well-being.
Don’t Overwater
Overwatering is one of the most common pitfalls in plant care. Check the moisture level of the soil before watering and adjust accordingly. Err on the side of caution to prevent waterlogged roots, which can lead to rot an other issues.
Monitor the plants’ condition throughout your sitting period. Observing the plant’s response to watering will help you refine your approach and provide optimal care.
Respect the plant parent's preferences and priorities. If you have innovative ideas or suggestions, discuss them with the owner before implementing any changes. Collaboration and communication are essential for successful houseplant sitting.
